Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Chris Long is giving away every single paycheck he earns this season.
Long gained attention for his charity last month when he used his first six game checks to create two scholarships for students in his hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia. After the events in Charlottesville this summer, Long and his wife, Megan, decided to act.
"In August, we watched people fill our hometown streets with hatred and bigotry," Long said in a statement. "Megan and I decided to try to combat those actions with our own positive investment in our community."
Long has now announced he will pledge his next 10 game checks to launch his
campaign. This means his entire pay for the 2017 season -- the entire $1 million in base salary -- will be going to charity.
"I believe that education is the best gateway to a better tomorrow for EVERYONE in America. I'm encouraging fans, businesses and every person with a desire to join in my pursuit of equal education opportunities for all students to make their own pledge," Long wrote.
Long's foundation has selected four organizations based in the three communities in which he has called home during his NFL career: St. Louis, Boston and Philadelphia.
The campaign challenges people to select a city and take the 10-week pledge with him. Long also has added a little competitive spirit to go along with the human spirit. The city that has the most pledges at the end the regular season will receive an additional $50,000 from Long toward the partner charity in that city.
This is just the most recent display of goodwill from Long.
has programs that help with clean water, homelessness, military appreciation, and youth in need. He was awarded the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 2015.
