First phase of Loussac construction close to completion

Posted On: LastEdited

Workers are getting close to wrapping up the first phase of construction at the Loussac library. When it’s finished in January of 2017, the $13 million project will include a new entranceway on the first floor as well as an expanded façade.

“We will be demolishing the main entrance and building a new four story structure there that increases the size of all four floors,” said Shay Throop with Pinnacle Construction.

Workers plan to take out the second floor entrance to the library in mid-December as well as the dreaded stairs that many consider a hazard.

The bulk of the construction is still ahead but changes because of it have already started. The annual Fall Book Sale, one of the libraries biggest fundraisers, has moved into a new space on the first floor.

Another library program has moved out of the building all-together. A new spot in the Mall at Sears will host some youth programs, including one called Books and Blocks that runs every Tuesday.

“We are also hoping if people find it difficult to get into Loussac with the construction that this will be a good option to bring young kids for story time experience,” said Elizabeth Nicolai, Youth Services Coordinator.

Inside and out, the library is changing with even more changes to come. The staff is urging patience.

“It can be frustrating to the public because things aren’t where they usually are and they love to come and find exactly what they want as quickly as possible, ” said Sherri Douglas, with the library.

Douglas said people who have questions about where something is located shouldn’t hesitate to ask.
