Anchorage store upcycles for charity

You’ve heard the saying, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” An Anchorage woman is putting her own twist on the idea.

Founder Patti Buist says donated “junk” is just what some need to help them through tough times. She says the idea is to take something old and make it new again, or in other words upcycle.

Some people, like Artist Judy Grimm, need a creative outlet.

“I’m always busy,” Grimm said. “I am making little Christmas socks out of old wool sweaters.”

They chase inspiration and think up ideas others would never dream of. Anchorage Re:MADE is a place for everyone to create.

“The rug on the floor is old jeans and suit pants. The whale up there is made out of old shirts. The Christmas tree is old pallets,” Buist said while showing off some her creations.

Anchorage Re:MADE is more than a creative workspace, it’s also a store. But what’s unique about it is that 100 percent of the proceeds are donated to Anchorage nonprofits, such as Love INC, Neighborworks and the Downtown Soup Kitchen.

“People love that it’s green, they love that it’s going to a good cause,” Buist said. “Everything we make here goes to help people in need right here in town.”

The store relies on donation of clothing, furniture and other decorations, as well as sponsorships that help pay the rent.

“Before it hits the landfill, we’ll take it,” Buist said.

Anchorage Re:MADE is currently looking for businesses and individuals to volunteer, teach classes and join in on the creative fun.

With the community’s help, Buist hopes the store will continue to thrive as a creative space where artists can transform trash into treasure.
