UPDATE: One dead in officer-involved shooting in Midtown

Published: Updated:

ANCHORAGE — The Anchorage Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting near the intersection of 32nd Avenue and Bering Street that left one person dead.

At a press conference, APD Chief Christopher Tolley confirmed one male was dead after an officer-involved shooting at an apartment complex on the 600 block of W. 32nd Ave. Tolley said two officers were responding to the residence after receiving a report of a disturbance just after 7 p.m.

“Shortly after officers responded, there were reports of shots fired made by the responding officers to dispatch,” Tolley said.

Residents of the building said they heard roughly four or fives shots fired.

Tolley said the deceased was armed with a knife, and that alcohol was believed to be a factor in the incident. Neither officer was injured.

The APD homicide unit is investigating, as is the Office of Special Prosecutions and Appeals, according to Tolley.

Tolley said the department had not had an officer-involved shooting since February of 2015, when a man was killed in a shootout with police. Tolley said the officers involved were cleared of any wrongdoing.

APD spokeswoman Jennifer Castro said it is department policy not to release the names of any officers involved in a shooting for 72 hours. She said both officers were placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
