Anchorage police plan to file charges against the person discovered to be in possession of a homemade explosive device Thursday afternoon, according to an updated release issued Friday.

“The suspect’s name will be released once those charges have been formally filed,” the release states.

Additionaly, a 45-year-old man was taken into custody for a probation violation during Thursday’s search. According to police, Ryan Hoeldt will not face charges related to the explosive device.

Earlier Story:

A homemade explosive device was discovered inside an east Anchorage residence during a drug investigation Thursday afternoon near 4th Ave. and Oklahoma St., according to Anchorage Police Department spokesperson Jennifer Castro.

APD sent out an alert Thursday evening just before 9 p.m. warning residents of a planned disposal of explosive ordinances at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

APD’s Vice Unit discovered the explosive device while serving a search warrant as part of a drug investigation. Police were unable to provide information on whether an arrest was made in connection with the search.

“No charges have been made in connection to the ordnance but it is still being investigated and that could change,” Castro wrote in an email to KTVA Thursday evening.

Homes near the Muldoon fourplex were evacuated by police as a precaution during Thursday’s search.

Police initially warned residents in the Anchorage and Eagle River areas that they would likely hear explosions for a couple of hours, but later issued a corrected alert stating that only one explosive device had been found.

“There does not appear to be any further threat to public safety regarding the ordnance,” wrote Castro.

This is a developing story, please check back for updates.
