Principal makes hats and scarves for each of her students

An Anchorage principal and her family have taken it upon themselves to make sure nearly 400 elementary students have warm winter gear.

Northwood ABC Elementary is a title one school, meaning many students come from low-income families and don’t always have warm gear to wear on cold days. To remedy this, for the last several months Principal Deanna Beck recruited her family and friends to help make fleece hats and scarves for each student.

“Everything that I do as a principal — it’s the side hugs and smiles from kids — that’s what makes everything worth it,” Beck said.

Tuesday was distribution day.

“I’m going to wear them everywhere,” said third grader Serenity Mayfield-Roe.

Students chose from dozens of colors and patterns.

“It’s just really nice to keep the kids warm because this may be the only hat and scarf they get for the year,” Beck said.

Beck said it makes her feel warm inside to know her students won’t be cold outside.

“For me to be able to know that at least one day I can send my kids out to recess with hats and scarves and that they’ll go home at the end of the day with a hat and scarf just makes me feel that much better. I know they’re a little bit warmer,” Beck said.

This is the project’s third year. Principal Beck has already begun recruiting helpers to make more hats and scarves.

She said each set costs about $1.
