Anchorage 2016 CDBG recipients announced

Anchorage – Nearly $1 million in Federal grant money will be distributed among six non-profits this year.

Mayor Ethan Berkowitz’s office has released the list of 2016 Community Development Block Grant recipients:

  • Alaska Literacy Program: $124,635 for an access and efficiency rehabilitation program.

  • Anchorage Community Mental Health Services: $250,000 to replace the roof at Seeds of Change, a facility that serves low-income and disabled youth.

  • Anchorage Senior Activity Center: $128,370 to upgrade their fire alarm system.

  • Challenge Alaska: $250,000 for the acquisition of real property for their Keil Center that serves individuals with disabilities and their families.

  • Rural Alaska Community Action Program: $115,200 for safety and efficiency upgrades at the Child Development Center that serves low-income families.

  • United Nonprofits, LLC: $88,342 for office safety and access office upgrades in space occupied by 8 non-profit organizations that serve low-income and disabled clients.

It all adds up to $956,547.

CDBG is a federally funded, competitive grant program administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

In a release, Mayor Berkowitz said “Anchorage is fortunate to work with terrific partners so that our community has safe places for our residents to benefit from fellowship and learning opportunities. These organizations are critical to weaving a strong, vibrant and inclusive Anchorage.”
