Preps underway for 20th annual Ski For Women

Some call it “the other” event that happens on Super Bowl Sunday in Anchorage. It’s the 20th year for the annual Ski For Women.

Race Director Tamra Cornfield said the 4K loop at Kincaid Park is looking good.

“I highly recommend going out and testing out the course,” Cornfield said. “Everything has been churned up so it’s good, it’s safe, it’s not icy. Getting down to the actual snow I would be careful in your ski boots, but in general, it’s going to be a comfortable race for everyone.”

Ski for Women is billed as the largest women’s cross country ski event in North America. It’s a fundraiser for agencies that work to end domestic abuse against women and children.

Cornfield said it’s a race for all abilities — there is both a timed portion and an untimed portion where participants compete in colorful costumes.

“Some people have been working weeks maybe months on their costumes and there are prizes for costumes. The atmosphere is incredible, people get very excited and it’s just a wonderful day out in the sun,” said Cornfield.

Cornfield said several hundred people have signed-up on line but even more are expected at the in-person registration and bib pick-up.

That happens on Friday at REI, from noon to 7:30 p.m.
