West High senior receives prestigious award for heroism

Posted On: LastEdited

At West High School, there are all kinds of students roaming the halls. Some, like Cadet MSgt. Judah Burnett, stand out more than others.

Burnett is a known leader who tries his best to do what’s right. Back in January, Burnett was driving with a friend on Arctic Boulevard when they noticed something was wrong.

“At first I thought this guy was kicking a dog, which is still wrong, then I realized it was a lady,” Burnett said.

Having been raised in an abusive home, Burnett felt he had to do something. He and other passersby scared the man off and cared for the woman until police arrived.

“I love to help people. Just seeing people who need help, it’s what I love to do,” Burnett said.

Burnett’s JROTC instructors got word of his bravery and surprised the high school senior with the Silver Valor Award. It’s second highest award possible for any JROTC member.

“No one has ever earned here at West High School that I’m aware of,” said JROTC instructor Jeff Ullom. “Cadet Burnett truly emulates our core values.”

“I was so honored that I was able to get it,” Burnett said. “Truthfully, I didn’t expect it.”

To Burnett, it was just doing what he was supposed to do, but sometimes simply being kind does come with something in return.
