Avoiding road rage: ‘Stay calm, don’t engage’

Posted On: LastEdited

An incident on Anchorage’s streets over the weekend is highlighting the dangers of road rage – and how to avoid it.

A run-in between a group of bikers and a pick up truck was caught on camera Saturday. The video, captured by one of the bikers, shows the pick up swerving around the motorcycles, coming very close to them and even passing on the shoulder. The bikers can also be seen speeding up to catch the truck at a red light. That’s when a physical confrontation happened, as the bikers tried to grab the driver through his window. The truck sped off, ending the incident.

Neither the pick up driver nor the bikers did the first thing driving instructor Amanda Bickford recommends: stay calm. She said not engaging with aggressive drivers is the best way to be safe.

“All of us, all of our decisions on the roadway affect everybody else, so we like to definitely teach students to be calm, collected,” Bickford said. “Do your best not to engage them or escalate the situation. If they’re trying to pass you, let them pass you, let them go on ahead. Otherwise, if they’re trying to engage or making hand gestures or trying to get your attention at a light, just kind of ignore them.”

She said if the other driver starts following you, do not go home. Drive to a public place with others around.

“Don’t get out of your car,” Bickford said. “You could honk your horn a little bit to draw attention to the situation and once you’re at a safe spot, pull out that cell phone, call 911, get the police on the phone.”

Police said no one involved in the incident on Saturday has filed a report, so their investigation is at a stand still. No one involved faces charges related to the incident.
