Mexican Consulate on Wheels program stays busy in south Anchorage

Posted On: LastEdited

The Mexican Consulate closed its doors in Anchorage more than a year ago. For Mexican citizens, that means the closest consulate they’d have to go to is in Seattle, for services that were once offered here. But over the weekend, the consulate came back to Alaska’s biggest city to provide necessary services.

On Saturday, folks packed into the south Anchorage strip mall office, where the Consulate on Wheels program set up shop. Mexican citizens took care of various documents, including first time passports. Those born in the U.S. into a Mexican family could apply for Mexican birth certificates and get dual citizenship.

“For us, it’s very important to talk to people, to our people,” Eduardo Sosa, deputy counsel at the Mexican Consulate. “It’s important to have the Mexican documents because they can have education in Mexico. They can go to Mexico, live better in Mexico as Mexicans, than foreigners.”

Anyone who wasn’t able to use the consulate’s services Saturday can try on Sunday, when they hold another session. Those interested will need to make an appointment. To do so, click here or call 1-877-639-4835.

The program will return to Anchorage later this year.
