Workforce Wednesday: Welding careers in Alaska

Posted On: LastEdited

Daybreak’s newest segment, Workforce Wednesday, is helping Alaskans get on the fast track to a rewarding career.

Wednesday, Cari-Ann Ketteling with the Alaska Process Industry Careers Consortium (APICC), and Riley Peck, who currently works in the welding industry, joined Daybreak to talk about career opportunities. Welders can make more than $100,000 per year, and companies like Tesoro and Vigor Alaska are currently hiring.

For those who want in, APICC has the ability to get you on the right track.

“We have an outreach coordinator that visits high schools across the state and rural communities and community events,” Ketteling said. “And it’s just really a great, great way for us to get out there and get the word about what the careers are available.”

Welding can lead to careers in areas such as: aviation, shipbuilding, mining and maintenance technology.

High school graduates starting from 2011 qualify for the Alaska Performance Scholarship. They may be eligible for $4,755 each year as long as they stay at or above a 2.5 GPA.
