Workforce Wednesday: SkillsUSA Alaska

Published: Updated:

SkillsUSA Alaska holds a competition every year aimed at getting Alaska high school students ready for a well-paying career early. Competitors can win a myriad of scholarships totaling more than $200,000.

According to its website, SkillsUSA is an organization that strives to provide trade and industrial education to students. Not only that, but it also encourages leadership. SkillsUSA achieves this by integrating into classrooms, utilizing the competition as a capstone.

At the regional competition, students will perform skills they’ve studied all year for evaluation and the chance to win a scholarship and go to the national competition. Even if students lose, they still have skills they can use later on in life.

Some of the technical industry skills evaluated at the competition range from construction to firefighting and culinary arts. According to Martha Peck, with Alaska Process Industry Careers Consortium, skills like interviewing are judged as well.

The competition starts Thursday, March 23, and ends Saturday, March 25. It will be at the Hilton Anchorage hotel. To get a student involved, check out the SkillsUSA website.
