Suspected Craigslist Buyer Held Seller at Gunpoint

MEDFORD, Ore. -- Jorge Serna, 21, was arraigned in Jackson County Court for robbery and theft charges.

According to Medford Police, Serna tried buying a Mercedes from a local man. Investigators said everything seemed find until Serna wanted to take the car out for a test drive. Things escalated when the suspect pulled out a gun on the seller and demanded him the get out of the car.

Serna drove off, leaving the buyer on the side of the road. About 20 minutes later, police officers in Phoenix area spotted Serna and arrested him. 

Medford Police recommends that seller and buyers utilize public places including the City Hall parking lot to do transactions. The department said it's also okay to use the lobby at the new Medford Police station which is under video surveillance.

Frequent Craigslist users like Levi Landis said they are cautious whenever they are buying or selling on the site. 

"Meet in a public location where there is a lot of people around. I wouldn't mind meeting someone by myself because if there is enough people around then they would here me call for help," said Landis.

Craigslist also recommends telling a friend where you are, take a cellphone and trust your instincts.

Serna's bail was set for $250,000 and his next hearing Nvember 7.
