Greene Emergency Squad Donates Defibrillator to Vestal Elks Club

The Vestal Elks Club members are learning how to use a defibrillator

The club just received a new AED - or automated external defibrillator Saturday.

The device diagnoses heart problems by monitoring a heartbeat.
The defibrillator was donated by the Greene Emergency Squad who had an extra one. The squad also provided CPR training.

"We have a big membership here, over 650 members, and so we have a lot of foot traffic throughout here day in and day out. Fortunately we've never had an emergency, but it's nice to have this on hand just in case something does arise," said Exalted Ruler of Vestal Elk's Lodge Mike Sage.

"Instead of waiting for the ambulance, they're already one step ahead of the problem and can take care of it, hopefully, themselves. And it helps the ambulance crew with CPR being established and the AED on. Then it gives the ambulance crew a much better chance of actually surviving," said Captain of Greene Emergency Squad Jim Strenkert.

After Saturday's training, 35 members will be certified. Officials say that they want to get the majority of their Lodge's members certified to use the equipment and they will host another training session next month.
