Fire Destroys a Barn in Tioga County

A fire has destroyed a horse barn in the Town of Nichols in Tioga County.
Officials say the blaze began around two o'clock Thursday afternoon and the flames and heavy black smoke could be seen for miles away. The barn was
located at 5715 East River Road.

Officials say no people or animals were injured in the fire and the cause of the blaze is under investigation. The Nichols Fire Chief says strong winds made this fire even more difficult to fight.

Nichols Fire Chief Robert Miner said, "It makes the fire even harder right now because we're fighting and trying to keep the fire from spreading. And obviously with the dry season that's going on right now grass and dead debris is catching fire and we're keeping that at bay."

Firefighters from Nichols, Tioga Center, Southside, Owego as well as two Pennsylvania fire departments were on scene battling the blaze.
