According to the Centers for Disease Control, heart disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women with over 600,000 people dying from it each year.

So officials from the American Heart Association are encouraging people to lace up their sneakers and take a 30 minute walk in an effort to being more active.

Lourdes Hospital has employees participating in a friendly competition where teams will log their miles walked over the course of the next two weeks and tally up the total at the Heart Walk.

Quality Specialist Mary Roney said, "Actually it's competition, and competition is good. We want to win so we've got everybody out participating, collecting their times, and the activities that they do and in the long run it helps us to be healthier."

The American Heart Association's Heart Walk will take place on Sunday, April 12th at 10:30am at Suny Broome's ice center.
