Defense Begins Calling Witnesses in Cal Harris Trial

By Beth Rousseau.
The state rests its case and the defense team calls its first witnesses
Wednesday in the trial of Cal Harris.

This is the third trial for the Town of Spencer man who is charged with the death of his wife Michele who disappeared in September 2001.

Prosecutors argued that Cal Harris was emotionally detached in the days following Michele's disappearance but The defense teams first two witnesses paint Cal's demeanor in a completely different light.

Harris family friend Lyn Angulas and Cal's best friend Todd Mansfield both say that Cal was openly upset when Michele went missing.
Angulas told jurors that the day after the disappearance Cal was in the principal's office at their children's school sobbing.

Mansfield said he was at the Harris household the evening after Michele went missing and that Cal was crying saying that this wasn't good and wondering aloud what he was going to tell his children.

Shortly after the state rested its case this morning defense attorney Donna Aldea argued that the evidence presented by prosecutors failed to meet the necessary burden of proof.

Aldea said that the blood stains found at the house were not enough to make it a crime scene. According to Aldea, this case was razor this last time and this time it's even weaker.

District attorney Kirk Martin rebutted saying that as far as blood there was nothing lacking in their case.

There will be no testimony Thursday but attorneys will be in court making legal arguments regarding whether or not Cal's daughter Jenna will be allowed to testify. Testimony is scheduled to continue on Monday morning at 10:30.
