Five-Time Town of Union Supervisor Jack Cheevers Passes Away

Five-time Town of Union Supervisor Jack Cheevers has died. He was 79 years old. Cheevers was first elected supervisor in 1979.

He served as supervisor for parts of the '70's, '80's, '90's, and the 2000's. He was also a former chairman of the Broome county democratic party. Friends say he served as a mentor for many, offering guidance to local officals and even those on a bigger stage.

"I know how important he was when Congressman Hinchey was in office to the Congressman. He's just the type of person who was always there to support you, to give you advice and to help get through some tight spots," said James Testani, Broome County Democratic Party Chairman.

"Because of the way the direction of the finances is set for the Town of Union we are in really good shape here. And I think that's a legacy and that continues even today. The Town of Union financially being in good shape is because of Jack Cheevers direction," said Town of Union Supervisor Rose Sotak.

In a statement Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo said, “Jack Cheevers was a highly respected community leader and someone whose advice I valued. He entered public service for all the right reasons; to help make this community a better place.
he certainly achieved that.”
