Mayor Announces Repair Work Begins on Exchange Street Bridge

Mayor Rich David announces that work on the Exchange Street Bridge Project has begun.

The $2.9 million reconstruction project marks the official start of the city's 2015 Infrastructure Improvement Plan.

"We are concerned that the infrastructure in this community has been neglected for a long period of time," said Mayor Rich David.

That's why the mayor says he's taking a proactive and aggressive approach to his 2015 infrastructure improvement plan--starting with repairing and repainting the Exchange Street Bridge.

"This is one of our busiest bridges. We have over 10,000 vehicles a day. That's why we're making it important that at least one sidewalk stays open all the time," said Rich Derkins, Assistant City Engineer for the City of Binghamton.

City officials say that because we did hit record lows this winter, there are many other infrastructure issues across the city that they need to tackle.

"Local leaders are seeing the potholes they're seeing the obvious things, seeing the fact that we have frozen water lines this year, multiple water breaks; it's really come to light the condition of our infrastructure," said Gary Holmes, City Engineer.

Other projects the city will work on this year include a $1.6 million investment into repairs for the South Washington Street Pedestrian Bridge and the second phase of the Riverside Drive Project.

Mayor David says in 2014, the city doubled the amount of streets it milled and paved, and he hopes to continue with that momentum into 2015.

"When all is said and done, in 2015, we're looking at approximately 28 million dollars worth of infrastructure projects and investment into the city of Binghamton, which really is unprecedented," said Mayor David.

Officials say the Exchange Street Bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic through early September. During construction traffic will be detoured to the State Street and Tompkins Street Bridges.

R. DeVincentus Construction will complete the project.
