Robbery Suspects Lure Victim Through Online Escort Option

Four people are arrested in connection with a robbery after police say the suspects used the website to lure in victims.

Binghamton police arrested Shadaya Spencer, 19, Aasin Hassinger,21, 18 Jamel Platt, 18, and a 16-year-old Saturday after officials say they advertised a female escort to lure in a victim.

The 37-year-old victim was directed to a Lake Avenue apartment where he was robbed at knife point. Detectives are saying this is not the first incident they've investigated this year involving the Backpage website and they're warning the community about the dangers of answering escort ads.

Binghamton Detectives Division Captain Jack Collins said, "It's dangerous and the incidents that we've had here the people have displayed what appeared to be firearms we've even recovered some BB guns but the one that happened over the weekend there was a knife involved. So for the potential for it to getting ugly real quick, it can happen."

Binghamton police say posing or acting as a prostitute is illegal in New York State and police are continuing to crack down on prostitution.
