Students Hold Sit-In Protest, Asking BU President to Make Anti-Discrimination Policy Statement

Posted On:
After spending hours protesting and sitting in outside Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger's office, the group "Students for Change" says that the president did appear after 5 hours of waiting.

The protest was in response to a Wednesday night Town Hall meeting about discrimination on campus that students say Stenger prematurely ended.

The student group staged a sit-in at the Couper Administration building and presented Stenger with a list of demands for equality on campus, specifically for the advancement of LGBTQ, Black and Latino rights.

The students wanted Stenger to make a public statement affirming BU has a zero tolerance policy for discrimination, but they say the president only showed for a short amount of time and briefly apologized for his exit Wednesday night.

One student says he didn't address the issues or answer any of the student's questions or concerns.

"Once again, he walked out on us. And him walking out on us is really indicative of the university and the administration's commitment to amending some of the racial divisions and some of the racial issues that are happening on campus, which are not being appropriately addressed," said Raul Cepin from Students for Change.

Earlier today the school released a statement which reads, in part: "We work very hard to ensure that Binghamton University is a place where all people are respected, and where tolerance and reason prevail over uncontrolled emotion and prejudice... we support students' right to demonstrate and express their opinions accordingly."
