Broome County's Population is Declining

New census figures show Broome County's population is on the decline. The latest numbers show Broome's population dropped from 200,600 people in 2010 to 197,349 in 2014. Those numbers reflect a trend upstate as 40 upstate counties total saw a decline since 2015. Officials pin the decline on an aging population and the desire of some to move to a warmer climate.

Deputy County Executive John Bernardo said, "If the trend continues it will certainly hurt, it will hurt us more than it has in the last ten years if you will. We are doing everything we can to change that trend."

Bernardo says some of the efforts to keep people in the area include a partnership with the County Industrial Development Agency and Binghamton University to grow jobs.
