Sabers happy to give their coach a title

As student-athlete, the ultimate prize is a state championship. Many student-athletes graduate without the chance to earn one. The next best thing is to win one as a coach. Even better if you can do it for your alma mater.

That's the story of Susquehanna Valley Girls Basketball Coach Eric Freije, a graduate of SV come back to guide the Sabers to their first ever state title in girls basketball. It's a dream come true for him, and his girls are ecstatic that they could be the ones to give it to him.

"He means a lot to all of us, even though he makes us run a lot and he yells, but he's still one of the coaches we're going to have to work with," said Erin Nolan, sophomore forward and State Finals MVP. "We all love to be around him and it means a lot that we can finally win it for him."

"He had a vision when we were younger and I had a feeling that this would happen, but the fact that he had that vision and it happened, it just proves he's an awesome coach," said Jordyn Williams, senior guard and team captain. "He didn't know it was going to happen, but he knew in his mind 'we're going to win a state championship' and all of us were like 'ok.... let's see what happens.' But he was right and he believes in us. You don't always have that in a coach and he's always believed in us and pushed us to be our best and he's just a great coach."

The season isn't over yet for SV, they have a shot at the Federation Title on Saturday as they play Staten Island Academy in a 9:00 am semifinal in Albany's SEFCU Arena.
