Citizens Share Ideas for Southern Tier Economic Development

Citizens gathered at SUNY Broome's Center for Civic Engagement tonight to pitch their ideas for economic development projects in the Southern Tier.

Tonight citizens brought their project plans with the hope that the Southern Tier Economic Development Council might include them in the final application for the upstate $500 million competition.

One speaker says that although it would be great to cultivate a new industry, she thinks the southern tier needs to work with industries it already has and cultivate jobs around them.

"Take the hospitality industry here up to another level by not just waiting for a racino to come in but by leveraging assets and opportunities that we have here today," said Mara Hale, a Binghamton resident.

Other project ideas included how to keep BU students here after graduation, afterschool programs for kids, uplifting the impoverished community, and projects to fight blight.
