BPD Chief Zikuski on Administrative Leave Following Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Posted On:
Binghamton Mayor Rich David announces the city's police chief Joseph Zikuski will be placed on a paid administrative leave after allegations of sexual misconduct.

The decision comes after Binghamton Police Officer Kristi Sager's formal discrimination complaint to the New York State Department of Human Rights Chief regarding Zikuski's alleged sexual advances toward her earlier this year.

Sager says she is facing charges of leaving her post and leaving the scene of an accident because she refused Zikuski's advances.

Binghamton Mayor Rich David has directed a personnel and safety director to interview all female police officers to reiterate the city's sexual harassment policy and to discuss concerns within the workplace.

The mayor says Assistant Chief Bill Yeager will serve as acting chief while David Eggelston will be the assistant chief as the investigation continues.

"I don't anticipate this to be a major disruption, I think we have two chiefs, current two assisting chiefs, that currently play a supporting role and will be able to continue to lead the department as this process takes course," said David.

David also emphasizes the decision to place Zikuski on paid leave is not a disciplinary action and does not imply the allegations are credible.

However, the mayor says it does allow for a more organized investigation.

David says Kristi Sager is suspended with pay as her disciplinary hearing is postponed while the Division of Human Rights investigates the case.

Police Chief Zikuski's administrative leave is effective tomorrow.
