Boeheim calls sanctions "unduly harsh"

In an early Thursday morning press conference, Syracuse Head Coach Jim Boeheim responded to the news that he will retire in three years as a result of the NCAA sanctions levied against the program. The penalties include the vacation of 108 wins, five years probation, a loss of 12 scholarships over four years, and a nine conference game suspension for Boeheim. He said during the press conference that he will appeal the penalties calling them "unduly harsh," adding that the report contained several inaccuracies.

"The committee on infractions has asserted that for the past ten years I did not promote an atmosphere of compliance within the men's basketball program," Boeheim said. "And I did not monitor the activities regarding compliance within the program. This could not be further from the truth."

In regards to his three year plan to retire, assuring a smooth transition, Boeheim said three years is the outside of the window. He says he will coach as long as he is effective, if next year he is not affective, he says he that will be it.
