United Way Recognizes Local Businesses

The United Way held it's annual meeting and awards recognition dinner Wednesday night at the state office building in Binghamton.

Local businesses and individual volunteers were recognized for their efforts to improve our community. Wegman's earned the "community spirit award" for raising 50 thousand dollars each year for the past ten years. United Way awarded the company for its volunteer efforts, sponsorship and continued support for programs in Broome County.

Executive Director of The United Way in Broome County, Alan Hertel said, "Wegmans supports our United Way in a significant manner but they also do a lot for the community as a whole. So I think that they really exemplify what it means to be a good corporate citizen."

United Way officials also discussed Broome County's challenging economy. They want to identify key problems and bring in additional resources in hopes to further improve our community.
