The National Center for Disease Control and Prevention says the martial art tai chi can help those 65 and older prevent falls and relieve pain from arthritis.
The Broome County Department of Health Initiative is holding an 8 week advanced tai chi class at the Jewish Community Center in Vestal. The class is held twice a week. The exercises improve balance, fitness, and relaxation.
"Our movements are closer to our body. We don't step far away. They are very slow and smooth so this way we are not putting any pressure on our joints. We are hoping to extend those joints to make them more comfortable," said Gail Goldberg, Certified Instructor.
Classes will run until April 30th and the cost to enroll is 50 dollars. Any one over the age of 80 can take the course for free.
