NYS Police Investigator Completes Testimony in Cal Harris Trial

By Beth Rousseau.
Investigator Steven Andersen completes his testimony after 7 days on the stand in the trial of Cal Harris.

This is the 3rd trial for the owego business man who is charged with the death of his wife Michele who disappeared in September 2001.

Tuesday jurors looked on as investigator Steven Andersen placed 1:1 ratio photos of each of the areas of staining found in the Harris garage on to a diagram. Defense attorney Bruce Barket then asked Andersen to remove all of the stained areas that did not undergo DNA blood testing, leaving just 6 areas on the diagram that have been confirmed as blood.

However, During redirect examination Andersen told district attorney Kirk Martin that it's protocol to take a representative sample of the staining and that all the stains he observed in the Harris garage were red and consistent with the stains that were tested.

Defense and prosecution spent a large portion of the morning arguing over whether or not jurors should view a segment of Andersen's interview with 48 Hours where he demonstrates the creation of medium velocity blood spatter.

Barket calls Andersen's demonstration in the interview "devastating to the prosecutors case" saying the spatter found in the Harris home is not consistent with spatter found at a bludgeoning scene, which is what prosecutors are alleging happened to Michele.

Meanwhile prosecutor Paul Clyne argued that not every crime scene is the same.

Ultimately the judge allowed the video to be played but not before instructing jurors that the video was only to show how blood spatter was created and not to demonstrate how Michele was killed.

The state will continue calling witnesses when court reconvenes
