Building a $500 Million Plan for the Southern Tier

By Fox 40 Staff.
With a potential $500 million prize on the line members of the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council met Monday to put together what they hope is a half-billion dollar plan.

The group met at Binghamton University. Governor Cuomo has proposed a $1.5 billion dollar Upstate Revitalization competition which would award three $500 million dollar prizes to three of seven competing upstate districts. Monday members heard from someone who has overseen what is known as the Buffalo Billion about the impact that money has had.

"The Buffalo Billion really focused on Buffalo and Erie County. We have to focus on eight counties and multiple urban centers so it's going to be a lot different," said Kevin McLaughlin, Executive Director.

"Having three hubs in our region of the Binghamton area, Ithaca/Cornell area, and Corning area and then drawing all the way from Sullivan to Steuben Counties, it allows us to bring more to the table than perhaps one urban area that Buffalo had," said Binghamton University President and STREDC Co-Chair Dr. Harvey Stenger.

Cuomo's competitive $1.5 billion plan for upstate still needs to be approved by the Legislature as part of this year's state budget.
