A Furry Friend Searching for a Forever Home

By Beth Rousseau.
If you're looking for a four legged friend the Broome County Dog Shelter might have just the dog for you.

Meet the shelter's longest resident, Ava.

Shelter ManagerKelly Conlon says, "She's got a wonderful personality. We don't see any aggression ever with her. She really just wants to please her people and play with toys."

Two year old Ava came to the shelter as a stray after she was found wandering the streets of Binghamton.

One year later she's still waiting for a family.

Conlon says, "She is a wonderful dog and I think she gets overlooked often here at the shelter because maybe her breed."

Kelly says that of the 300 dogs brought to the shelter annually 70% of them are pit bulls, just like Ava.

"There is so many of them out there. There's so many people breeding the breed and people buying the puppies and then they end up coming here after they're not so cute anymore," says Conlon.

According to Kelly it takes longer for pit bulls to get adopted than any other breed, most likely because of their reputation for aggression.

She says this is a complete misconception.

"Lots of times they're one of the most friendly breed here, there are other breeds here I could say that could be worse... way worse than the pit bulls," says Conlon.

Kelly adds that when matched with the correct home, pit bulls can make a great additions to the family.
