GFJ Elementary Hosts a Festival of Learning

150 elementary school students in Endicott displayed a wide array of knowledge at the school's festival of learning today.

The students have spent the past couple of months researching a topic of their choice. Each child explained their project to an adult, including professors from Binghamton University, parents, and personnel from the Roberson Museum. We spoke to a pair of fifth-grade students who learned which is the best environment for growing plants.

"We had to look at why these grew the tallest and the facts didn't really match up so we had to look up more things until we go to chlorophyll and acid rain," said 5th-grade student Donovan Dutcher.

"I think one of the most valuable components is having them communicate and answer questions about your project, which is probably the most important of the 21st century skills that we teach," said Dr. Larry Dake, Principal at George F. Johnson Elementary School.

The 150 students who took part in the festival of learning represent about one quarter of the school's student body.
