SUNY Campuses Call for NY SUNY 2020 Extension

SUNY Broome and Binghamton University presidents are calling on legislators to extend the NY SUNY 2020 Challenge Grant Program.

The program's goal is to provide affordable education on SUNY campuses.
Officials are calling on the governor to increase the state's 2015-2016 budget for educational funding and extend the program through 2020 as well as the colleges' investment fund.

If fulfilled, that fund will allow for 150,000 students to graduate annually by year 2020.

BU President Harvey Stenger said, "We are trying to encourage them to put that legislation in place now rather than waiting until next year which will be the last year."

SUNY Broome President Drumm said, "Base aid going up would keep tuition down, access to higher education up and student debt down."

On the positive side for BU, Stenger says the governor has already allocated the funds for the pharmacy school into the budget.

Additional funds would go toward other school expenses such as building maintenance, programs and increasing retention and graduation rates.
