A Transportation Program for Seniors Could be in Jeopardy

Posted On:
A service dozens of otherwise potentially house bound seniors use to get out of their homes could be in jeopardy.

Catholic Charities RSVP Senior Transportation Program serves 42 seniors in Binghamton to get door-to-door service to go to places such as senior centers in an effort keep them living at home independently longer. However the program, which costs $70,000 to run, received $10,000 from the city of Binghamton in 2014. That funding may not be there this year because of a cut in community development block grant funding.

"We personalize the service. If the seniors are not responding to their trip that they are expected to make then we phone them. We go the extra mile," said Sandra Ohlsen, Division Manager of Catholic Charities of Broome County.

According to a spokesperson for the city of Binghamton, a final decision on whether the program will receive the funding won't be until early March.
