Binghamton Men's Hoops drops a game at New Hampshire 66-48

DURHAM, N.H. – Host New Hampshire (16-10, 9-4 AE) started the second half with a 15-2 run and the Wildcats wore out shorthanded Binghamton basketball (4-24, 3-10 AE) 66-48 Saturday afternoon at Lundholm Gym.

Down 30-23 at the break, BU missed nine of its first 10 shots to start the second period and UNH capitalized with the decisive run.

Despite a lingering illness, freshman forward Bobby Ahearn put in a gutsy showing with 10 points and six rebounds before fouling out with 6:23 left. It was the sixth time this season he has reached double figures. Sophomore guards Yosef Yacob and Marlon Beck each also netted 10 points - the 10th time this season Beck has reached twin digits.

"New Hampshire is playing very well and we had a hard time putting the ball in the basket," head coach Tommy Dempsey said. "Sometimes there isn't a remedy when the shots aren't falling. We played very hard and fought hard on the glass though. It was a long shooting day but I thought our competitive spirit was there."

The Bearcats grinded their way through a foul-plagued first half, trimming an 11-point deficit to seven by scoring the final four points of the period. Already depleted by illness and injury, BU had to rotate all nine guys into the game early as sophomore forward Magnus Richards and freshman guard Romello Walker were each saddled with early fouls and had three at the half.

Ahearn scored on a putback and made two free throws in the final 1:28 to trim BU's deficit to 30-23 at the break. Sophomore guard Yosef Yacob tallied seven points in the first half to pace the offense.

But the Wildcats hit 5-of-10 to start the second and BU could pull no closer than 12 the rest of the way.

Ahearn made 4-of-7 but the rest of the team struggled to 24 percent shooting (11-of-46).

Binghamton returns home to host second-place Vermont Wednesday night. Two of the team's three remaining regular season games are at home beginning with the 7 p.m. tilt against the Catamounts.
