Citizen Advocates Call for Leadership in NYS Energy Reform

Making New York a renewable energy leader--that's the goal of a group of citizen advocates who gathered tonight for a public hearing with the Public Service Commission.

With the state of New York looking to overhaul it's energy policy, which is known as "Reforming the Energy Vision," some residents say they'd like to see the PSC include some strong energy goals. Specifically, these advocates would like to see the PSC prohibit utility companies from monopolizing control and ownership over the new energy system,"

"We need aggressive leadership towards a decentralized power grid that is constructed by the people, for the people rather than utility companies who run the show and operate only to serve their own bottom line rather than us," said Isaac Silberman-Gorn, Citizen Action, Environmental Organizer.

"What we're asking the Public Service Commission to do is to set up a system so that our community can reap the benefits of the tens of thousands of jobs and the billions of dollars it's going to take to help turn the oldest electricity in system in the world into the cutting edge electricity system in the world," said Adam Flint, Southern Tier Solar Works Program Manager.

Members of Citizen Action and other local environmental groups plan to continue pushing for public control of energy into the future.
