Bearcats bested by Great Danes

ALBANY, N.Y. – Shereesha Richards scored a game-high 35 points, leading Albany (18-7, 11-1 AE) to a 75-53 win over Binghamton (4-21, 2-10 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Wednesday afternoon at SEFCU Arena.

Richards, who is the reigning America East Player of the Year, went 14-for-21 from the field and was 7-of-10 from the free throw line. She paced a Great Dane offense that shot 46 percent from the field (30-of-66).

The Bearcats, meanwhile, had three players reach double figures in scoring. Junior Kim Albrecht scored 17 points while freshman point guard Jasmine Sina and senior forward Sherae Swinson each finished with 16 points.

Sina, who is the current two-time America East Rookie of the Week, has now reached double figures in scoring a team-best 10 straight games. Swinson also added a team-high six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal.

Albany broke the game open early, going on a 13-0 run in a span of 5:10 to go up 22-7 midway through the first half. Richards had eight of her points during that stretch.

From there, the Great Danes went up 34-15 at the half. In the process, they forced 13 Binghamton turnovers over the first 20 minutes which were converted into 14 points.

In the second half, Albany opened up with an 18-5 blitz in the first 3:46 to go up 52-20. Richards led the way with 10 points during that stretch.

The Bearcats, however, kept battling and climbed to within 64-49 with 3:08 left to go. Freshman guard Imani Watkins capped the run with a layup.

The Great Danes iced the game by hitting four of their six free throws down the stretch.

Binghamton hosts New Hampshire on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a game that will air on ESPN3. It will also mark the program's annual Coaches vs. Cancer game.

NOTES: Swinson now has 921 career points. Against Albany she moved into 17th place all time in program history, surpassing Jen Gata (1992-94), who scored 918 points. In 16th place is Reagan Stevens (1993-97), with 923 career points.
