Governor Cuomo Proposes Exemptions for Craft Beer Tasting Industry

Could a new state tax break help the craft beer industry? Governor Cuomo hopes so..

Cuomo is proposing an exemption on the use tax, currently enjoyed by the wine industry for tastings, be expanded to include beer, cider, and spirits. The tax applies to products that are produced for sale but end up being used for promotional and marketing purposes.

The owner of the North Brewery in Endicott says tastings only represent about one percent of sales but they are a major marketing opportunity. He feels between this potential tax break paired with the recently enacted Craft New York Act is giving the industry some momentum.

"It's going to have a pretty big impact on us because we're going to be able to take that tax money that we'd normally have to pay for taxes and put it back into the business," said Zach Pedley, Owner of The North Brewery.

Cuomo also wants to extend the exemption for off-premises tastings.
