BU Zoo has strong impact on Bearcats

Posted On:
Down by as many as 15 in the second half on Tuesday against Hartford, the Bearcats rallied to a one point loss in the final seconds when Marlon Beck intercepted an in-bounds pass and drained a 3-pointer as time expired. The outcome is not what they had hoped for, given they were riding back-to-back wins and facing a Hawks team that has been struggling of late. Even so, it was a great show put on in front of 4,445 fans, 1,081 of them BU students.

While the Bearats struggled shooting at times, the crowd willed them onward, and when the going got better, the crowd got louder.

"It makes an incredible difference. In college basketball, the reason why it's so hard to win on the road is because, especially at the higher levels where the buildings are packed, it's so hard to win those games because of the emotional level of the crowd," said Bearcats Head Coach Tommy Dempsey. "If we 4,500 fans and we go quietly and lose by 19-20, it doesn't really inspire anyone to come back. But, to fight and to come back and play as hard as we did, and have so many guys on the floor, diving for balls, attacking the basket, and playing with good emotion good energy... This is a team that is going to be a lot of fun to root for. I really believe that. But, we need this community and student body to start identifying with them now. We have some more home opportunities and we have to play our butts off for our fans and out student body over the next month and hopefully they start to feel like this is a team that's fun to root for. I feel like that's as much of our challenge or as much as our goal as anything else, just be a team that everyone wants to see play."

Lady Bearcats Head Coach Linda Cimino even joined the BU Zoo and was holding the cardboard big head cutout of Tony Kornheiser, anchor of ESPN's Pardon the Interruption and BU alum.

The Bearcats hit the road on Saturday against Maine before returning home on Tuesday against UAlbany.
