The Humane Society is putting your used cans and bottles to good use.

It's all part of their "Cans for Canine" initiative to raise money for the animals in the shelter. The money redeemed from the recyclables will go toward food, electricity and all other essentials to provide a stable environment for the animals.

Organizers say the shelter has seen a 28-percent increase in pets this year compared to last and they just need a little extra help from the community.

"We're a little low on funds to provide the veterinary care that the animals need right now so when there's a big event such as a Super Bowl or Memorial Day event or anytime of year for a gathering we try to push the cans and bottles because people have an excess of them so why not give back to the animals," said Karen Matson, Executive Director of the Humane Society.

You can drop off your cans and bottles off at the Humane Society Tuesday through Friday 12-5 and Saturday 11-4.

The drive ends this Saturday, but shelter officials say they'll continue to accept redeemable cans and bottles throughout the year.
