Southern Tier Stem Hub Donates Thousands for Stem Projects

Posted On:
More than $45,000 in grant money will help jump start stem projects for students throughout the area.

The Southern Tier Stem Hub will give the money to eleven different schools. projects will help students learn about careers in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM. The schools will be able to purchase equipment and create stem-like activities that will teach students about time management, teamwork and the trial and error process. BOCES officials say that not only will it help the kids but they hope it will help local businesses as well.

"If you think of Lockheed Martin, if you think of IBM, you look at all the engineering firms, there's quite a bit of need coming forward right now and in the future to have people that are coming out of that mindset," said Kathryn Sheehan, Assistant Superintendent at BOCES.
"We're hoping to get students interested in these occupations and these career pathways so hopefully some of our local businesses will be their employer of choice down the road," said Sandra Watkins, School-To-School Partnership.

According to BOCES 3,400 students will be impacted by this year's grants.
