Binghamton Officials Inform Seniors About Star Tax Exemptions

The city of Binghamton is trying to make sure seniors know about the Star Tax exemptions available to them.
Members of the real property tax office met with people at the first ward senior center Tuesday afternoon to go over the exemptions. The Basic Star exemption is available to anyone who owns their primary residence with an annual income under $500,000. The Enhanced Star is for those 65 and older who net less than $83,300 per year. The low-income age exemption is for those 65 and over with a gross income under $31,500.
"Basic STAR is for the school bill and it helps around $600. It's a round figure. The Enhanced STAR is also for the school bill and it's around $1,200. The Low Income Age one is for the school and property bill and according to your income it varies," said Margaret Myers of the Binghamton Real Property Tax Office.
There is another Star Property Tax assistance event at the first ward senior center on Wednesday, February 18th. People should bring their license, 2013 tax returns, and 2014 income statements. You can also call the assessor's office at 772-7002.
