Retrievers spoil Swinson's birthday

VESTAL, N.Y. – Taylor McCarley scored a game-high 24 points while Capree Garner added 15 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, powering UMBC (7-14, 2-6 AE) to a 71-55 win over Binghamton (4-17, 2-6 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Wednesday night at the Events Center. The game marked the end of the first half of the conference schedule.

The Bearcats had rallied from a 16-point deficit in the first half but were undone by 22 turnovers and 10 missed free throws. In second half, Binghamton made only six of its 22 field goal attempts.

"I thought we exerted a lot of energy in the first half coming back," head coach Linda Cimino said. "We struggled to make our free throws and layups tonight and that hurt us as well."

Down 26-10 midway through the first half, the Bearcats went on a 21-5 run to tie the game at 31-31 on jumper by junior guard Kim Albrecht with 2:04 left in the first half. She ended the game with a team-high 19 points.

McCarley had the only point in the final two minutes of the first half on a made free throw with four seconds left to go. The Retrievers then scored the first nine points of the second half to go up 41-31 with 16:20 left in regulation.

Albrecht brought the Bearcats to within 43-41 when she hit a jumper at the 14:17 mark. From there, however, UMBC went on a 15-3 blitz to go up 58-44 with 7:01 remaining in regulation. Garner had five points and McNaughton had four points during that stretch.

Freshman point guard Jasmine Sina finished with 13 points, a career-high eight rebounds and three assists. Senior guard Gintare Surdokaite, meanwhile, added a career-high 12 points.

Dana Lewis chipped in 13 points for the Retrievers.

Binghamton heads to UMass Lowell for a 2 p.m. game on Sunday.

NOTES: Senior forward Sherae Swinson grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. It marks the eighth time in her career that she has finished in double figures in rebounding … Sina has now reached double figures in scoring a team-best six consecutive games.
