Attorney, Sheriff Spar after Inmate Death

Posted On:
An attorney representing the family of a Broome County inmate who died last week is claiming that inmate was the victim of misconduct by Broome County Sheriff's Officials. 35-year-old Salladin Barton was found unresponsive in his cell Wednesday. Officials performed CPR but he was later pronounced dead at Wilson hospital, according to the sheriff's office.

The family has teamed up with Attorney Ron Benjamin to investigate. Benjamin said Barton was facing abuse from corrections officers while in the jail. He says he will investigate if that could have been linked to Barton's death. Sheriff Dave Harder, however, denies the allegations.

Attorney Ron Benjamin said, "We know a few things and that among those are that he was beaten by correction officers on more than one occasion. He had food withheld, behaviors that were simply inappropriate."

Broome County Sheriff Harder said, "Shame shame on Mr. Benjamin if he had information on a 'so called' client as he calls him on abuse that goes on why didn't he come forward? Why did he he hold information back? We know of no abuse whatsoever here."

Benjamin also alleges that drugs were in Barton's system. Toxicology and autopsy reports have not been released yet so no actual cause of death has been determined.
