The Southern Tier received $500 million as a part of the Upstate Revitalization Initiative Awards. Leaders say the historic investment will have a $3 billion impact on the regional economy and create 10,000 new jobs.

The Southern Tier region was one of three grand prize winners and will receive $100 million each year for five years to fund projects which will improve the economy.

The Finger Lakes and Central New York regions were the other two winners.

Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger co-chairs the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council and a key player on the proposal team.

Stenger said the region will see new jobs as early as this summer.

Senator Fred Akshar said this in regards to the Southern Tier's victory:

"The Southern Tier Regional Council worked hard and put forth the best plan in the state. It really paid off. I appreciate Governor Cuomo recognizing the Southern Tier's needs for jobs, opportunity and economic growth. It's incumbent upon government to create an environment with opportunities for people and businesses to thrive in our communities. Although I wasn't involved in the process this year, I look forward to working hard with local leaders to help see these projects through to fruition."

Assemblywoman Lupardo had this to say about the big win:

“This is terrific news for the Southern Tier,” said Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, who was also part of the Strategic Implementation Assessment Team, the board tasked with reviewing each proposal. “This award is a testament to the excellent collaborative work already taking place in the region. The plan expands on the Southern Tier’s strengths and is proof that the region has what it takes to be a leader in rebuilding Upstate's economy.”

Broome County Executive Debbie Preston reacted to today’s announcement of $500 million coming to the Southern Tier by saying:

“This is a great day in the Southern Tier and we want to thank our team for an outstanding application as well as the committee and the Governor for recognizing the need for this funding in our community,” says Broome County Executive Debbie Preston. “New York State is wisely reinvesting in the Southern Tier and we have several projects that will not only bring jobs, but will bring real development and opportunity to our community.”

Binghamton Mayor Richard C. David, had this to say on the Southern Tier Region winning the $500 million Upstate Revitalization Competition:

“This massive investment in the Southern Tier will have ripple effects for decades and will be a primary catalyst to jumpstart our local economy. I’d like to thank Governor Cuomo for his recognition that the Southern Tier deserved these funds, and that our plan to create jobs was dynamic and transformative.

Each time I’ve spoken to Governor Cuomo about the Southern Tier economic struggles or a specific project in the City of Binghamton, he has assured me and that he would be there to help when the time came. Today, Governor Cuomo solidified his commitment to the region and I thank him for his support. Binghamton’s projects will help lead the way in transforming our region.”
