Deposit Hosts Heroin Awareness Discussion for Educators

Posted On:
Deposit is a town right off interstate 81- a convenient stop for drug runners. And just like in other communities, heroin is the drug of choice. So with less than a week before the start of school, the district hosted a night for educators on their growing role in this problem.

Nearly 500 bags of heroin seized in a July drug arrest. It confirmed what many already knew. Heroin is in this community and affecting the lives of more and more people. Deposit resident, Nancy Stanton never suspected anyone close to her was using it.

"I had no idea what was going on even though it was before my eyes. And I just want to learn more so I can help somebody else before they die or really get hurt," said Stanton.

Stanton and dozens of people - including counselors, members of law enforcement teachers and school leaders joined together for a frank discussion. How to connect with teenagers - an age group largely behind this fast moving epidemic.

"I think if they're hearing it and seeing it and they're seeing that this many people care about trying to stop it then maybe we will hit home with them," said Theresa Rajner. She is the principal of Deposit's middle school and high school.

Rajner adds Deposit residents can count on more educational nights, more NARCAN training.

Deposit and other schools statewide will be trained on how to administer the medication used to reverse an overdose, as part of New York's efforts to combat heroin. That's because school personnel are now considered first responders in the eyes of the state.
