Jets will not return to SUNY Cortland

Posted On:
After holding their summer training camp at SUNY Cortland five of the last six years, the New York Jets announced Tuesday that they will move their training camp to Florham Park, NJ and their Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. It's a decision that was not made over-night, yet some saw coming for months.

“SUNY Cortland felt like home because of the tremendous local support we received during our time there,” said Jets Owner Woody Johnson. “President Erik Bitterbaum and the university staff, as well as the families and businesses of Central New York, all went above and beyond to embrace our organization and create a comfortable environment for our team and fans. They always will be a part of our Jets family.”

“We have thoroughly enjoyed hosting summer training camp for the New York Jets and deeply appreciate the experience, which was beneficial for the College, the team and the community,” SUNY Cortland President Erik Bitterbaum said. “We wish the team well this season and in the future.”

Keeping the training camp closer to the Meadowlands cuts financial costs for the team as well as the added bonus of moving closer to the team's primary fan base in the New York Metropolitan area.

But the impact will be felt on the city they leave behind. According to a report issued by the college, last year's training camp was a $4.6 million boost to the Cortland County economy and all five camps combined saw $23.84 million of economic activity. Last year's camp alone saw 22,500 visitors from 34 states and five countries visit Cortland, up from 21,240 in 2013. In five years of Jets Camp in Cortland, 154,000 people visited the city. The $4.6 million dollar influx includes $2.5 million of direct spending ($2.1 million of that from spectators).

“We are very grateful for the outstanding support of our fans in Cortland and to fans who made and enjoyed trips to the area,” said Jets President Neil Glat. “Our hope is that our training in Florham Park will allow additional fans to experience the fun and excitement of a Jets Training Camp this year.”

With the Jets moving to their training facility, 21 of the league's 32 teams now hold training camp at their own practice facilities.
