A Local Organization Provides Information on Preventing Birth Defects

Making healthy choices to prevent birth defects... that's the goal of one organization during the month of January.

This month is National Birth Defect month. Mothers and Babies Perinatal Network is focusing on the topic of planning pregnancy through their PACT program. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, birth defects affect one in every 33 babies in the United States. The PACT program will help expecting mothers plan ahead, avoid harmful substances, choose a healthy lifestyle, and talk to a doctor.

"We know that not all birth defects can be prevented but choosing to do the PACT and making sure your planning and doing all the right things can help some of those birth defects," said Christie Finch, Professional Education Coordinator at Mothers and Babies Perinatal Network.

"Advocation for yourself I think is important, knowing how you feel, is it good to see a doctor early and making sure that you're doing your prenatal vitamins. All those things from the very beginning are important. I think it's very important to study up on them, know what they are and make sure you're following them," said Mary Hackemer, Expectant Mother.

Finch says if you are pregnant and you aren't quite sure what to do or if you have any health questions or questions about the pact program, be sure to call their office at (607)772-05177.
