Congressman Hanna Speaks Out on Rules Regarding Rest for Professional Drivers

Posted On:
Congressman Richard Hanna was in Vestal Thursday discussing what he says is the suspension of an onerous rule for professional truck drivers.

Owner of Burr Truck and Trailer Sales says that the rule forced drivers into a sleep cycle which was not studied and it mandated drivers to have two consecutive rest periods of 1am to 5am.

Richard Hanna says that this rule not only costs the trucking industry 400 million dollars annually, but it's also less safe because it forces drivers to be on the roads during peak hours.

Safety Director of Terpening Trucking Mark Vallely said, "Essentially the government was telling these drivers that you're tired because of a study that was never done says that you're tired. And these drivers have been driving this way for 20 to 30 years. So these drivers have become accustomed to it so it really hindered our capabilities."

The rule suspension only removes the two periods of rest between 1am-5am as part of the 34-hour restart. Truckers will still need to have 34 hours of rest before restarting seven or eight consecutive days of driving.
